Love and Happiness the title of the famed song by timeless soul singer Al Green comes to mind when I think of relationships. But of course who is to say that a self –sufficient woman isn’t or cannot be just as happy in a relationship but still doing things for herself that used to be considered a “man’s role”. Things like paying on the date, having her own car, home or other signs of a woman’s independence which make those around her question her “need” for a man in the first place.
Why is it that when woman want to be independent they are seen as “against men” or in a negative light by society? Times are changing, woman are just showing that they can be the sole bread-winners of the relationship. We need to learn to stand alone, apart from the men in our lives. That doesn’t mean that they are less important or their impact has decreased, just that you have become your own woman, perfectly capable of surviving alone .God forbid your man decides to go astray. When I was a young girl I was taught not to let a man define who I am, or a relationship validate me. In the popular song “Independent” by Lil Boosie, & Webbie which came out in 2009 in the line that reads “ Cause she got her own money, she don’t need no help mayne”
So in this line are they insinuating that women don’t need men for anything other than sex? Does this mean that they don’t need us for nothing more than a cheap thrill and to pick up the tab after the meal? No women are not sex objects although at times rap videos portray them as such; we are much more than meets the eye. I believe that some of these songs were created to give women a sense of self-esteem and let them know that men appreciate and are attracted to their independence. Every woman has the power to give off the impression that she chooses whether she is an independent women, has help from her man, anyone in her life that means something to her, or is working towards the independence that will fulfill her life.
These are some of MY favorite Independant woman songs are Destiny's Child independant Woman and Ne-yo Ms. Independant!
